Artist Statement
In my printmaking- and book arts-based studio practice, I make sculptural works that consider the impossible miracle of human communication and intimacy, reaching out to another person across a void. to open / you provides a glimpse at the soil underneath that studio practice. My personal experience with longing and communication has been expressed largely through hand-made love letters sent from myself to my beloved, each one uniquely constructed to send a part of myself. These love letters depend upon certain tensions: a delay between sending and receiving; material traces of my presence even in my physical absence; and using limited words to refer to implied feelings and context. In this exhibition, this collection of love letters, sent over several years, is loaned back to me and displayed as a single ebbing and flowing continuum of intimacy, longing, and the tensions of communication.
